The heart pumps blood; arteries carry blood away from the heart, veins return it; the body has one circulation through the lungs (for oxygen) and one through the body. Communicable diseases spread from person to person (pathogens: bacteria, viruses, fungi, protists). Non-communicable diseases (e.g. heart disease, diabetes) are not spread. Defence: skin, white blood cells, antibodies, vaccinations, hygiene, and medicines (antibiotics treat bacteria, not viruses).

Materials have properties (hardness, strength, flexibility, waterproof, transparent, conductivity). Some changes are reversible (physical — melting, freezing, dissolving) and some irreversible (chemical — burning, cooking, rusting) where new materials form.

Conductors (mostly metals) let heat/electrical energy pass easily; insulators (wood, plastic, rubber, glass) do not. A circuit must be complete (a loop) for current to flow; electrical conductors carry current, and switches open/close the circuit.

In a chemical reaction, substances change into new substances (often with a fizz, colour change, temperature change, or a new gas/solid). Indicators of a reaction: colour change, gas produced, temperature rise/fall, a new insoluble solid (precipitate). Reactants → products.

The cell is the basic unit of life. Organelles and their jobs: nucleus (control/DNA), cell membrane (gateway), cytoplasm (where reactions happen), mitochondria (energy), ribosomes (make proteins). Each element has a symbol (one or two letters), a name and an atomic number (number of protons). The table is arranged in groups (columns) of elements with similar properties: Group 1 alkali metals, Group 17 halogens, Group 18 noble gases, and metals vs non-metals.

The pH scale runs 0–14. Acids are below 7 (lemon juice, vinegar), neutral is 7 (water), bases/alkalis are above 7 (soap, baking soda). Indicators (universal indicator, litmus) change colour to show acidity, and acids + bases neutralise each other.

A force is a push or pull. A bigger force → bigger acceleration; a bigger mass needs more force for the same acceleration. Friction/air resistance slow objects. Sound is made by vibration. Pitch depends on frequency (faster vibration = higher pitch); loudness depends on amplitude (bigger vibration = louder). Sound needs a medium — it travels fastest in solids, slowest in gases, and not through a vacuum. Echoes/sonar use reflected sound to locate objects.
